Where are the adrenal glands & how do they function?
The adrenal glands sit just above the kidneys in the middle of your lower back. Each kidney has one adrenal gland, which sits on it. The adrenal gland is surrounded by protective adipose tissue, which is a protective layer of good fat. (Yet, another reason to be sure to eat plenty of good fats.)
When the body is stressed, it produces epinephrine, which will cause vasoconstriction throughout most of the body, including the lungs. This vasoconstriction decreases the production of mucous in the airways. At the same time, epinephrine will relax the bronchi (bronchodilation) allowing more air to reach the lungs.
In those with adrenal fatigue, the body cannot respond to the epinephrine because of lack of cortisol so they experience bronchoconstriction instead, leading to symptoms of asthma. The bronchoconstriction, along with vasodilation and swelling of the mucous membranes create a back pressure in pulmonary circulation (pulmonary hypertension) that causes the pulmonary valve to slam shut, hence the accentuated second sound over the pulmonic valve.
(NOTE: lung diseases such as tuberculosis or tumors can also cause this loud 2nd sound.)
There are two functional sections of the adrenal: The Cortex, and the Medulla.
What does the Cortex do?
1. Production of DHEA and other sex hormones. These play a much more important role for women than for men. Although these hormones can be converted into testosterone within the testes but the testes also produces testosterone directly from cholesterol without the adrenal glands.
PLEASE NOTE: Cholesterol is manufactured by the liver and CANNOT be changed by foods or anything we ingest. Using anything to lower cholesterol causes damage to the body as you are taking away something that is much needed by our bodies. One such function is sex hormones for men.
What does the Medulla do?
The medulla secretes 3 different catecholamines: Epinephrine (adrenaline) norepinephrine, & dopamine.
These are also known as your “stress response hormones”. These are vital to our fight or flight response.
When we are under stress the brain sends a signal to the adrenal glands, which react instantly by releasing these stress hormones. These hormones in turn slow down the digestive system, increase our awareness, & divert blood flow to the important areas of the body such as, the brain and muscles systems.
***It is suggested to take the adrenal quiz to determine your level of adrenal fatigue.
